  • Opening of Broad & Bright Tokyo Office
    - In celebration of the grand opening lecture as well as celebration banquet held in Tokyo for the new opening of Broad & Bright Tokyo Office

    Broad & Bright is honored to announce the opening of its Tokyo Office on December 1st, 2014.

    Broad & Bright Tokyo Office is established by Broad & Bright in association with Japan Toranomon Chuo Law Firm (hereinafter referred to as ‘Toranomon Chuo Firm’) in a form of joint venture, which has been approved by the Ministry of Justice of Japan and Japan Federation of Bar Association, and registered in Japan as an overseas branch of Broad & Bright. The official registered name is Toranomon Chuo Law Firm Broad & Bright Foreign Law Firm (foreign law joint venture).

    Mr. Yifan CHEN, partner of Broad & Bright, has been approved by the Ministry of Justice of Japan to practice in Japan as an officially registered foreign lawyer in Japan. Mr. Yifan CHEN (partner) and Mr. Hongliang YIN (counsel) will be the resident partner/counsel of Broad & Bright Tokyo Office.

    Broad & Bright and Toranomon Chuo Firm jointly held a lecture as well a celebration banquet in Japan Okura Hotels & Resorts on December 2nd. Nearly 750 client representatives and friends from all business sectors, together with about 30 partners, counsel, and senior associates from Broad & Bright Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong Offices attended this grand gala.

    During the afternoon of the event, lawyers from Broad & Bright (Jun JI, Yifan CHEN, Hui DONG, Weiwei WENG, Taotao ZHU, Hongliang YIN and Feng ZHAO) together with lawyers from Toranomon Chuo Firm presented keynote lectures on the topics of 4 major issues in the Sino-Japan economic and trade practice, namely “Compliance Management Standards in Multi-National Corporations”, “Merger & Acquisition and Merger Control Filings”, “Debt Collection” and “Major Issues on Labor Law Practice”.

    At the celebration banquet, Mr. Yoshihiko Miyauchi, Senior President of ORIX Corporation headquarter, Mr. Fumio Sudo, Chairman of Tokyo Electricity Powers Corporation, Mr. Yuji Miyamoto, former Japanese Ambassador to China and current Representative of Miyamoto Asia Research Institute and Mr. Naotoshi Okada, Vice-Chairman of Japan Economic News Press Co., made speeches respectively on behalf of the guests. Mr. Komura Masahiko, the president of Japan-China Friendship Parliamentarian’s Union sent a message of congratulations. The residential partner of the Tokyo Office, Mr. Yifan CHEN presented a toast. And lastly, Mr. Kazuo Imai, representative lawyer of Toranomon Chuo Firm, and Mr. Jun JI, managing partner of Broad & Bright, made a speech on behalf of the firms to appreciate the long-term support and trust from the clients and friends, and to commit themselves to the active promotion of Sino-Japan economic and trade relations by providing higher quality of legal services to both Chinese and Japanese enterprises in the future.

  • Broad & Bright Partners attend The U.S. - China Legal Summit – SHANGHAI

    Kai Yuan (Keith) and Hao Jiang participated in panel discussion on the topic of “Foreign Investment Trends” at The U.S. - China Legal Summit – SHANGHAI on 25th November 2014.

    Kai Yuan commented on the recent relaxation of market entry barriers, opportunities and challenges that the foreign investors may encounter in 2015.  Hao Jiang discussed about general anti-avoidance rules of the PRC.  Kai and Hao further discussed the lessons learnt from the joint venture and M&A projects together with other panel members.

    Over two hundred senior in-house counsels from multinational corporations attend this Summit, which is organized by The American Lawyer.

    Mr. David Wang and Mr. Hongchuan Liu have been nominated as a Leading Lawyer in the IFLR1000 (2015 edition) in the area of “M&A”. In addition, Ms. Yao Feng was honoured the Leading Lawyer in area of “Competition”.

  • PROMINENT CORPORATE/M&A ATTORNEY Peter neumann JOINS broad & bright

    Broad & Bright is pleased to announce that veteran China practice corporate attorney Peter A. Neumann has joined the firm as an International Partner.  Mr. Neumann possesses deep knowledge of the China business and investment environment, with 20 years of cross border FDI and M&A experience, and has also handled numerous Asia Pacific regional matters. Mr. Neumann will be based in the Shanghai office and spearhead strategic practice initiatives in the United States.

    Neumann brings over 20 years of experience representing and counseling clients on corporate, M&A, market entry, regulatory and compliance matters in Greater China and Asia Pacific. Relocating to Shanghai from Hong Kong in 1997, he previously served as Shanghai Managing Partner of Deacons, Faegre & Benson and Greenberg Traurig. From 2011 until he joining Broad & Bright on October 1, Peter held the position of Vice President and Asia Pacific General Counsel for Celanese Corporation, a Fortune 500 chemicals and specialty materials company.

In addition, he counsels Chinese companies on going-abroad strategies and fund-raising.

He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1984 with a major in Chinese language and literature, and earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the UCLA School of Law in 1989, where he also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Pacific Basin Law Journal.

  • Broad & Bright held a seminar on “Arbitration and Dispute Resolution under the New Economic Circumstances”

    Broad & Bright held a seminar on “Recent Hot Topics on Arbitration” in its Shanghai office on September 25, 2014. The speaker is Mr. Huang Wen, vice secretary general of Shanghai International Arbitration Center.     On the afternoon of September 20, 2014, Broad & Bright and the Research Center of International Economics and Administrative Law (In Preparation) of Fudan University jointly hosted the seminar on “Globalization and the Economic and Administrative Law”.  Professor Shudi Zhu from the Law School of Fudan University and an alumni Mr. Liming Ni presided as the chairpersons of this academic seminar.   Philips Z.   • On September 19, 2014, Mr. Yifan Chen of Broad & Bright participated in the “Commercial Practice in PRC Trade Business” Lecture Series organized by Japan Tariff Association, and held a 2-hour lecture featuring the hot topic of “Commercial Bribery and Legal Measures against Anti-trust”, the GSK case as well as latest anti-trust cases in the automobile industry.  Management and operational personnel of more than 30 Japanese enterprises participated in the lecture.

  • On August 28, 2014, Broad & Bright co-hosted a Seminar on Mainland China’s Economic and Trade Regulations with Taiwan Trade, Center Beijing Representative Office. More than 60 Taiwanese-invested enterprises participated in the Seminar and fully discussed and communicated on important labor law issues.

    Broad & Bright co-hosted a Seminar on Mainland China’s Economic and Trade Regulations with Taiwan Trade, Center Beijing Representative Office, during which Mr. Yifan Chen and Mr. Wei Lu gave a keynote speech on “Measures to deal with Labor Crisis and Company’s Unilateral Termination” and Mr. Jun Ji, Mr. Linzhu Wang, and Mr. Chong’an Chen attended following discussion and Q&A session. Senior management personnel, legal counsels, and human resource managers from more than 60 Taiwanese-invested enterprises located in Northern China participated in the Seminar, who fully exchanged their views and engaged in heated discussions on issues of collective bargain, labor risk estimation and management, establishment of employment rules and etc.
  • Broad & Bright Opens Hong Kong and Guangzhou Offices

    Broad & Bright is pleased to announce the opening of its Hong Kong and Guangzhou Offices.

    Broad & Bright Hong Kong Office was established on June 13, 2014, and is a registered foreign law firm and in association with CFN Lawyers, Hong Kong local law firm. Broad & Bright and CFN Lawyers jointly held a cocktail party celebrating the association between firms on June 26, 2014.

    Jun JI and Philips Z. DING are the resident partners of the Hong Kong office. They will split their time between Hong Kong office and Beijing/Shanghai offices.

    Guangzhou Office is led by Mr. Hui DONG, office managing partner, who is supported by Mr. Kai Yuan (Keith), corporate partner, and Taotao Zhu, a Japanese speaking counsel. The Judicial Bureau of Guangzhou Municipality has granted the practicing license to Broad & Bright Guangzhou Office.

    Guangzhou and Hong Kong offices will work seamlessly to serve multinational companies’ business in Southern China.
  • The 1st Cross-Strait Forum for Economics and Finance Legal Practices jointly organized by Broad & Bright and NCCU Center for Corporate Governance was held in National Chengchi University on June 10, 2014. It has attracted more than 200 participants from academic and governmental area in Taiwan.

    Mr. Jun Ji, Mr. Philips Ding, Mr. Linzhu Wang, Mr. Hui Dong, Mr. Weiwei Weng, Mr. Yifan Chen, Ms. Jinlin Sun, Mr. Chongan Chen, and others from Broad & Bright attended the 1st Cross-Strait Forum for Economics and Finance Legal Practices jointly organized by Broad & Bright and NCCU Center for Corporate Governance. Lawyers from Broad & Bright and professors from NCCU discussed in detail various hot topics in cross-strait legal practice, in terms of merger and acquisition, intellectual property law, engineering law and received positive feedback from the audience.

    During this trip, Broad & Bright lawyers have also visited PWC Taiwan and Formosan Brothers Attorneys-at-Law. Except for exchanging experience in providing legal service for foreign investment in China, Broad & Bright has also took a steady step in the development of further cooperation and better customer service.
  • Firm retreat to Kagoshima, Japan

    From May 31 to 4 June, 2014, all members of Broad & Bright Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou offices and alumni gathered in Kagoshima, Japan to jointly celebrate the tenth anniversary of Broad & Bright.
  • The 10th Anniversary Celebratory Events of Broad & Bright

    During the first half of 2014, Broad & Bright has organized a series of celebratory events for its 10th Anniversary. On April 10, 2014 the first grand event was hosted at Grand Hyatt Guangzhou Hotel with all partners and hundreds of their high-end clients from different fields present at the event. This evening party also announced the opening of Broad & Bright Guangzhou Office later this year. Located in the heart of Guangzhou, the new office will be led by Mr. Dong Hui Guangzhou office managing partner.

    Subsequently, Broad & Bright held the celebratory events at Shanghai Langham Xintiandi Hotel on May 6, 2014 and at Park Hyatt Beijing Hotel on May 12, 2014. At the same dates, Broad & Bright also invited the clients to attend the seminars on the topics of corporate M&A, labor, IP litigation and anti-trust compliance. The lawyers of Broad & Bright shared their experience and insights of the recent development of these practice areas with the clients.

    At the events, Broad & Bright prepared a video to memorize the past decade and look forward to embarking on the new venture in the future.   • Mr. Hongliang Yin joined Broad & Bright as counsel on May 1, 2014. Mr. Yin will be based in Toranomon Chuo Law Firm (Tokyo) starting from May 19, 2014. In addition to recruitment of Mr. Yin, Broad & Bright will adopt a series of strategies to expand its footprint in Japan related business.
  • HR Practice Legal Advisor co-edited by Mr. Chen Yifan from Broad & Bright and Mr. Dong Runqing from Baohua Law Firm was officially published in May 2014. The editing team of the book was constituted of lawyers from both law firms. This book analyzes 38 practical issues in human resources matters and 217 legal issues commonly seen in employment matters and shall serve as the latest quick reference guide for enterprise human resources.

    Li Bo, specialized in anti-trust law and international trade law, has been promoted to be partner at the Beijing Office of Broad & Bright.
    Candy H. Chen, a corporate law expert, has been promoted to be counsel at the Beijing Office of Broad & Bright.
    Taotao Zhu, a Japanese speaking senior lawyer, has been promoted to be counsel at the Shanghai office and will be relocated to Guangzhou office after Broad & Bright receives regulatory approval.
  • Kai (Keith) Yuan, joined Broad & Bright as partner on April 1, 2014. Previously, Mr. Yuan worked with the Hong Kong offices of Goodwin Procter and DLA Pipers. His practices focus on venture capital/private equity, capital markets and real estate.

    After we receive the regulatory approvals, Mr. Yuan will be based in the Guangzhou office of Broad & Bright,. In addition to recruitment of Mr. Yuan, Broad & Bright will adopt a series of strategies to expand its footprint in Southern China.
  • On March 17, 2014, Mr. David Wang, managing partner of Broad & Bright Shanghai Office, has been empanelled with the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA) as arbitrator for the term 2014-2017.
  • On March 15, 2014, Philips Ding, partner at Broad & Bright attended the academic workshop of "International Economic Administrative Law and Financial Governance" held by the International Economic Administrative Law Research Center of Fudan University (in preparation). The topic for the workshop is "Internet Financial Regulation and Consumers' Rights Protection from Administrative Law Perspective - in view of Yu'ebao". Philips, as a speaker, analyzed the legal issues regarding Yu'ebao and proposed his personal advice for future legislation of the state. The speakers at the workshop consist of professionals from all sectors, including securities regulatory authority, administration of industry and commerce, international third-party payment institution, commercial bank, security firm, insurance company, and etc.
  • Several partners of Broad & Bright attended the ninth IFLR Asia M&A Forum in Hong Kong on 25 and 26 February 2014.

    Hongchuan Liu and Chuangchun Yuan participated in the panel discussion on the topic of due diligence. They shared their experience in the key aspects during due diligence exercise due to the recent changes in China’s legal regime.
